How do we get all of this wonderful information for Record Search? We get much of it from another project called FamilySearch Indexing.
Here is our method of extraction:
Microfilm images are digitized
Digitized images made available to Volunteers via the Internet
Volunteers are given a software program and a password to access the FamilySearch Indexing project site
Volunteers can now download images to their home computer, extract the data by typing information into the FamilySearch Indexing software and then the completed batch is sent back to the FamilySearch Indexing site
Batches are sent in 20s, meaning you would have 20 images or 20 names to extract data and send back. This can be done at the volunteers own pace and leisure
The same batch is sent to another volunteer
Results of the extracted data are tabulated
Discrepancies are sent to a moderator who makes a final decision on the image and its indexing.
After images are extracted, checked and moderated as necessary the final data is compiled into a database
Databases are then easily searched by users and can be added to the FamilySearch web site as additional searchable choices for web users
